ANGLING
Lough Melvin, with its three distinct species of brown trout,
(Gillaroo, Sonagahan & ferox) is renowned for its game fishing and
has a world reputation 'par excellence'. Salmon fishing is available all
year round with
a good run of early spring fish with the summer providing some great grilse
fishing. The lake also holds Artic Char, Perch, Eels and Rudd. The Rudd
have recently been 'introduced' to the lake, (only be coming
numerous and widespread in the last 10 years) and are now threatening
the delicate ecosystem of the Lough so anglers are advised to remove them
from the water.
Nearby is Lower Lough
Erne, famous for both its course and game fishing (Pike, Perch, Roach,
Rudd, Bream, Eels, Brown Trout, Salmon). There is a particularly good
Mayfly hatch on the Erne system with many large brown trout succumbing
to the temptation. Lough Macnean is also close by and is primarily a course
fishing venue. (Pike, Perch, Roach, Rudd, Bream, Eels, Brown Trout). The
Atlantic Ocean is a short drive for the Sea fishing enthusiast.
The surrounding area
also offers a host of lakes and rivers remaining in a natural and pristine
state providing a paradise to be explored at leisure by the visiting angler!
WARNING!!!
Zebra mussels are now becoming widespread throughout the Erne system so
anglers transporting water-craft are requested to enure their hulls and
engines are thoroughly cleaned to prevent contamination of 'clean' waters.
